The very concept of letters having their own physical existence is, philosophically, extremely worrying. Indeed, it would be like noses and fingers running around the world all by themselves.
The truth will out, or at least it's going to try to, any minute. New printing technology means that words just won't obediently stay nailed down like

usual. They can now be taken apart and used to make other words. Which is downright dangerous. There's a very real threat of news getting out there. Of people finding out what is really going on. And the powers that be aren't happy - they want that to be far from the truth.
If they are to call a halt to this madness of free speech, they may have the succumb to their despotic tendencies. But will they, in this brave new world, still be able to have the last word?

Financial Times

Daily Telegraph

Fluent, intricately plotted and very funny.

If you are unfamiliar with Pratchett's unique blend of philosophical badinage, you are on the threshold of a mind-expanding opportunity.

The Crew by Bali Rai

The Crew, by Bali Rai

Portsmouth's Teen Reading Group

 ---

Greetings! As the title of this website suggests, we are teen readers from Portsmouth

 ---

We want to share with you our views and opinions on the books we’ve read, both as a group and individually. We also want your opinions, to find out what you think about books you've read, and share them with others, making recommendations and discussing various aspects.

The books we read vary from ‘teen reads’ to adult books, covering many different issues, cultures and situations. The best thing is that we read books we wouldn’t normally pick up and often end up enjoying them. There are also plenty of books we have hated, but that's OK. We believe that you are not obliged to read the whole book – it isn’t a punishment!

 The Small Print (literally small)

 ---

Portsmouth's Teen Reading Group takes no responsibility for the content or security of any external site or third party advertising, whether accessed via this site or otherwise.

 ---

Furthermore, site users are responsible for their own postings. Which is Bad...

Google, the Internet giant which everyone uses in their day to day lives, is setting up something which is receiving more complaints about anything else that has ever been released by them... It is named Streets View, and instead of using just Google Earth and Google Maps to view the world from a birds eye view, Google has now made it possible to view a 3D image of a house anywhere in the world.

Okay, it has not happened in Britain yet, but there are reported sightings of vehicles emblazoned with Google's multicolored lettering and carrying massive, 3D cameras round snapping up private pictures of homes across the country. Several complaints have risen concerning the way theft may be increased, because criminals will now be able to plan an escape route even if they are on the other side of the world. There have also been complaints about the way several persons have accidentally been captured on image and yet still sent to the Internet without the persons permission.Google's CEO tells everyone that faces are automatically blurred by the software they use, but have not yet said anything concerning numerical car plates. There are worries that criminal activity will increase with this new information and massive database of 3D pictures of homes across the world.

Although it has not happened in Britain, the Internet giant has already admitted that it will. Pictures like above mentioned have already been collected and published to the web in major areas throughout America.

 By Steve

Book about penguin family with two fathers tops list of 'challenged books' in USA.

"And Tango Makes Three," released in 2005 and co-written by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell, was the most "challenged" book in U.S. public schools and libraries for the second straight year, according to the American Library Association.

 Read more Here

 ---

 ---

Check out this article from THE BOOKSELLER. Any ideas from anybody are welcome. There are two versions currently running.

The misleadingly named "Definitive" version, which is the raw work, forming the core of the story, establishing characters and themes. It's also as mad as a march hare; it doesn't even have a fixed perspective! Feel free to do almost ANYTHING with this version because we have.....

The edited version. This work is, as it sounds, the edited copy of the "Definitive" version. The characters, races and ideas are fleshed out, and a stroyline (heaven forbid) will emerge. Some characters have changed, but its still the same epic at heart. This is behind the "Definitive" copy, as this version is still in the process of being rewritten from the original. The person (largely) in charge of this is Sawendro, with Archaon providing additional material, and Children being (occasionally) consulted.

For both versions, there are downloads available at the bottom of the page.

Enjoy!

Right peeps, Update time, for anyone who's still interested.

work on this project is progressing (shock horror etc). due to University commitments needing to be made by both myself and Sawendro, we have had to take a sabaticle from this project, although we did still hold MSN confrences, and we managed to work out pretty much what we want, though it's still pretty flexible.
basicly, now that work has begun again, we've taken a step back from what we already have, and between us, we've been attempting to create a back-story, or a supporting framework for our ideas. Currently this consists of history, sociology and so on about the (Blood) Marinii, a sub-faction within them, which i don't believe is mentioned in any current version, The Weria, and their origins, and the little-mentioned Kroat, whom we are giving a good fleshing out.
we also intend to create backstories for all the existing characters, though some have been altered considerably from what is written on these psted versions.

Also, Sawendro has involved some friends from Uni in this project, and the result is that the new home for the DLBiA project is Here. The narrator of this novel wakes up in hospital to find that, by missing the end of the world, he has survived to witness a new world. But the new world that awaits him is fantastic and horrific.

"John Wyndham achieves a razor-edge balance between wry satire and stark tragedy. The story cuts deep into the imagination, leaving the reader shaken by its violent insights"

The novel contains many themes which are common in Wyndham's work: a depiction of the Soviet Union as an opaque, inscrutable menace, a central problem made worse by human greed and bickering, and a firm determination on the part of the author to not explicitly detail the origin of the threat faced by the protagonists. In addition, there is a rather central theme to the book - the survival and rebuilding of humankind.

The author first started writing short stories and detective novels for the American market in 1925. During the war he was in the Civil Service and afterwards in the Army. In 1946 he returned to writing and went on to become one of Great Britain's most serious and literate pioneers of intelligent science fiction.

This month's book is brought to you because reading group member thechildrenoftherevolution requested we make it so.

And make it so we have...

WARNING! (The novel was written at a time when Lysenkoism was still current in the Soviet Union and had not been debunked in that country. While the scientists of capitalist countries did not support the theory, prominent communists of those lands such as Edward Thompson had sometimes defended it to the public). Masen further speculates that Triffid seeds were spread world-wide when an attempt was made to smuggle them out of Russia; the escaping plane was presumably shot down, literally scattering the seeds to the winds.

Whatever their source, when Triffids begin sprouting all over the world, it is soon ascertained how commercially useful their various oils and proteins can be. Along with the resulting world-wide slew of Triffid farms, many households keep them as a curiosity, almost a garden pet, making sure to have the sting docked at regular intervals. In commercial exploitation, the stings are left intact as docking impairs the quality of the plants' oil.

The story proper opens with Masen in hospital, his eyes bandaged after having been stung by a Triffid penned at one of the farms. He discovers that while he has been recuperating, the light from an unusual meteor shower has rendered most people on Earth blind. (Bill later muses that the shower may in fact have been the misfiring of a space-based weapon system, though, as with the Triffids' origins, the truth is never revealed.) After wandering aimlessly through London, watching civilization collapsing around him, Masen rescues a sighted woman who is being used as an unwilling pair of eyes by a blinded man. He learns that she is a novelist named Josella Playton, whose work has earned her a rather infamous and mostly undeserved reputation, one which continues to dog her throughout the entire book. The two of them quickly fall in love.

A signal draws them to a larger group of sighted survivors lead by a man named Beadley, who are planning to flee London before it becomes a disease-ridden deathtrap, and establish a colony somewhere in the countryside. Unfortunately, another unblinded man named Coker takes it upon himself to try and save as many of the blind as possible; he stages a disturbance and kidnaps both Bill and Josella. Both are forcibly put to work leading squads of blind people around sections of the rapidly-decaying city, attempting to collect food and supplies. Masen sticks with this out of a sense of responsibility, until the people in his charge begin dying of some unknown plague (possibly yet another military experiment run amuck.) He leaves, and attempts to locate Josella, but his only immediate lead is an address left behind by the uncaptured and now-departed members of Beadley's group. Thrown together with a repentant Coker, he travels to the address in Wiltshire. They succeed in finding the place, but the group has splintered; neither Beadley nor Josella are there and the group's new leader is less than willing to help the new arrivals. Remembering a chance comment Josella made earlier about a certain country home in Sussex, Bill sets off in search of it, while Coker remains behind to try and help the "new" group.

As all of this is happening, the Triffids are quickly regrowing their stings and taking full Darwinian advantage of the new edge over humankind that events have given them. Undocked specimens in captivity break free, and growing numbers of them become bolder and more aggressive every day. Bill is joined by a young sighted girl named Susan, whom had become a near-prisoner in her home due to the plants. They succeed in locating Josella, who is sheltering at the described house with the blinded owners. Bill and Josella consider themselves to be married, and see Susan as their daughter. The group settles down and attempts to create a self-sufficient colony, but with only marginal success; the Triffids grow ever more numerous, crowding in and surrounding their small island of civilization. Years pass, during which the situation slowly but inevitably deteriorates. Then one day a helicopter-pilot representative of Beadley's faction lands at the farm and tells his hosts that Beadley and his followers have cleared the Isle of Wight of Triffids, and established a successful colony there. (And that Coker survived to join them.) Despite their ongoing struggles, the Masens are still reluctant to leave their home, but their hand is forced by the arrival the next day of a large armored vehicle, operated by a squad of "soldiers" who represent a despotic new government which is setting up feudal enclaves across the country. When the leader of this gang announces his intention to take Susan away to another enclave, the Masens disable his transport and flee in the night. They join the Isle of Wight colony, and settle down to the long grim struggle ahead, finding a way to destroy the Triffids and reclaim Earth for humanity

A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian

A story of dry comical romance, the horrible news of the death of a loved one and the sibling rivalry between sisters Nadezha and Vera. Using a powerful spell Phelios destroyed Duzell but he perished as a sacrifice for using such a strong spell. As both laid dying, Duzell swore that he would be reincarnated to find Phelios' reincarnation and when he did he would drain Phelios' blood, rip his body limb from limb and laugh while his soul writhes, damned for eternity to a lake of fire. A later, Duzell is reborn as a wildcat called a kyawl. Unfortunately, he can't find the reincarnation of the now Saint Phelios. Luckily, he is adopted by his nemesis' great-granddaughter, the 15-year-old princess Ishtar, through whom Duzell may be able to find the reincarnation of Phelios. She is also initially ignorant about many things a child her age would be expected to know, among them doorbells, escalators, air conditioners, and even playground swings. This ignorance results in humorous stories where she learns about, and frequently misunderstands, everyday things.

At the start of the series, Yotsuba and her adoptive father, Koiwai, relocate to a new city with the help of Koiwai's best friend, an impressively tall man nicknamed Jumbo. Yotsuba makes a strong impression on the three daughters of the neighboring Ayase family, Asagi, Fuka, and Ena, and many of her misadventures come from interactions with them.

The series has no continuing plot—the focus is Yotsuba's daily voyage of discovery. Significantly, many chapters can be identified as taking place on successive days, which reinforces the sense of that we are following the characters' daily life. The tone can be summarized by the motto, used on chapter title pages and advertising, "Today is always the most enjoyable day" ("Itsu de mo kyō wa, ichiban tanoshii hi").Ghost In The Shell by Masamune Shirow - Originally a Japanese cyberpunk manga, Ghost In The Shell has been adapted into two movies - Ghost In The Shell, Ghost In The Shell 2 : Innocence - as well as a TV series - Ghost In The Shell Stand Alone Complex (and the second series GITSSAC 2nd Gig) - with a third movie - GITSSAC Solid State Society due for UK release in August 2007

 ---

The central theme of this manga is the blurring of the boundary between man and machine, as "cyberisation" is now widespread, indeed Major Motoko Kusanagi, the lead character, has an entirely prosthetic body.
